Climate change

BEWI works actively to reduce its emissions by adopting a circular economy model and by increasing its use of renewable energy- and material sources, both of which are key elements in the company’s strategy to mitigate climate change. Through the integration of the value chain, BEWI is able to find synergies in collaborations to increase production, recycling, and reuse of products based on low-carbon materials.

Solar panels in Portugal

Our two manufacturing facilities in Peniche and Santo Tirso, Portugal hold over 2,500 photovoltaic solar panels, generating more than 1,922 MWh annually. This competitive and clean energy is shared with approximately 800 families and small businesses, contributing to preventing up to 500 tons of CO2 each year.

Increasing energy efficiency

The transition to renewable energy sources remains a challenge. In 2022, BEWI established an energy committee, working to improve energy efficiency and increased use of renewable energy sources. Several pilot projects have been conducted, aiming at enabling the company to make informed decisions with regards to investments in energy efficiency and transition to renewable energy sources.

Biofoam

Biofoam® looks similar to EPS and has more or less the same properties. It’s a patented product and a result of our dedicated focus on innovating sustainable solutions. Biofoam® is durable and well suited for both moulded parts and cut products. This opens the door to technical products and packaging solutions with an unprecedented freedom of design. TCFD implementation

In 2023, BEWI completed an assessment in line with the TCFD recommendations with an emphasis to increase knowledge about climate related risks and opportunities and to ensure that these are integrated in both governance, strategy and management approach and are part of the company`s daily operation.

3rd party-verified mapping of local climate risk

A mapping of physical and transitional risks was conducted by the management in 2021 and a physical risk assessment of all production facilities and warehouses was conducted in 2022. The company are in the process of arranging workshops, aiming at identifying potential impact on facilities and operations, and agreeing on mitigation measures

Commitment to Science-based targets

BEWI has committed to align with the 1.5-degree scenario outlined in the Paris Climate Agreement by committing to the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). BEWI has worked systematically to continuously improve its climate account since the baseline was set for 2020. The company reports on all categories within scope 1, 2 and 3 of the GHG protocol.
