Strengthening partnerships in EPS recycling

BEWI welcomed partners from across Europe to an Open House at its recycling facility in Slaný, Czechia. The event brought together stakeholders from the recycling value chain and the waste management sector to exchange knowledge and discuss opportunities for collaboration.

The Slaný site is one of BEWI’s recycling facilities converting used EPS (expanded polystyrene) into rGPPS (recycled general-purpose polystyrene), which is then used in new insulation and packaging applications. This work is part of BEWI’s growing circular business, now operating at a run rate of 40 000 tonnes of collected used EPS annually across Europe.

Inside the recycling process

“I’m impressed by BEWI’s expertise in handling different streams of used EPS. The processes and internal control ensure high quality of the final recycled raw material,” says Ioannis Kragiopoulos from Fibrotermica.

During the Open House event, visitors toured the facility to see the recycling processes and learn about material and operational requirements. Discussions centred on how predictable offtake, clear procedures, and efficient logistics can support partners in turning used EPS into value while preparing for future regulations.

Meeting circular demands

“By showing how we work, we build partnerships and demonstrate how circular solutions support both environmental progress and long-term business value,” says Elin Sohlberg, Head of Circular Division at BEWI.

BEWI continues to scale collection and increase the share of recycled content in its product offering, meeting customers’ demand for circular solutions and international targets for recycled content.
