BEWI introduces Certified Recycled EPS

- perfect for reducing the climate footprint of packaging

Plastic packaging is necessary and useful to protect food and reduce food waste. But as we need to reduce consumption of natural resources, we need to reuse and recycle more. Now, BEWI introduces Certified Recycled EPS (CREPS), which is EPS raw material and end-products based on recycled feedstock – perfectly suited for food packaging.

Innovative, cost-efficient and circular solutions

“Providing our customers with innovative, cost-efficient and circular solutions has long been a priority for us in BEWI. We are therefore proud to introduce Certified Recycled EPS, a way to significantly increase the use of recycled feedstock and offer customers packaging solutions that reduce their CO2 footprint,” explains Christian Bekken, CEO of BEWI ASA.

Avoidance of plastic taxes

By using Certified Recycled EPS, companies can achieve what the regulators are targeting through the different schemes – which is to increase the use of recycled content in packaging and reduce waste, in an effort to reach climate neutrality. This can result in avoidance of plastic taxes, while at the same time meeting the requirements of the upcoming Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulations (PPWR).

"Our Certified Recycled EPS is especially relevant for customers in UK and Spain, where a national tax on plastic packaging have already been implemented. We expect to see more countries implementing similar taxes going forward”

27 000 tonnes of used EPS collected for recycling

In BEWI, plastic packaging is already recycled at scale and in practice. In 2023, the group collected 27 000 tonnes of used EPS for recycling, more than any other insulation company in Europe. By using the proven mechanical recycling process, the material is converted into new raw material.

"At BEWI, we ensure that used EPS is repurposed into high-quality raw material and new products. Certified Recycled EPS is part of a broader commitment to reduce, reuse and recycle”

About Certified Recycled EPS (CREPS):

Certified Recycled EPS is EPS raw material and end-products based on recycled feedstock specifically designed to meet the stringent requirements for food and pharmaceutical packaging. The material can also be used for other purposes, such as protective packaging and insulation solutions.

In the manufacturing process, a mix of recycled and virgin feedstock is used. A third-party certification (REDCert) secures the allocation of the properties of the raw material to the industries and products where they are best suited.

The performance and quality of the material is maintained, while the CO₂ footprint is significantly reduced.
